March Discussion: COVID-19, Brain Health & Mental Wellbeing

By March 17, 2021November 3rd, 2022No Comments

Despite all we’ve learned about COVID-19 in the past year, there are still a lot of unknowns. One of the major questions surrounding the disease is the way it affects brain health and mental well-being.

Doctors in a large Chicago medical center report that upwards of 40% of patients with COVID showed neurologic manifestations at the outset, and of those, more than 30% showed signs of impaired cognition. Particularly troubling is the increasing evidence of mild (but very real) brain damage that can occur, causing pervasive yet subtle cognitive, behavioral, and psychological problems. And even for those who do not get sick, there are consequences – quarantining leads to depression, anxiety, and a host of other issues that can affect brain health and mental well-being as well.

La Posada’s March event featured an interactive virtual discussion featuring medical and wellness experts such as Dr. Linda Pao, a neurologist specializing in neurological disorders – dementia/Alzheimer’s care, strokes and Parkinson’s disease; and Kisco Senior Living’s National Director of Wellness and Memory Care Libbi Hash, among others. These experts offered information and insights on the topic, and they also took time to answer attendee’s questions during a Q&A session after the panel.
